Here are some FAQs that may help or head to the contact page and ask away...
I mainly deliver in-person sessions in the Reigate area but on occasions also work in other areas of Surrey & West Sussex so feel free to ask. I work with clients across the country via videocall and this can be a good option if you travel for work, live far from each other or find it difficult to talk in the same room.
You can attend individually to discuss your relationship. We can always change to couple or family work after a few weeks should other people wish to attend. If you attend individual counselling for a longer period it may not be suitable to move to couple work with me but this will all be discussed and explained at the start so that you can make an informed decision.
You don't have to have all the answers when you make contact and sometimes there is more than one direction you can take. The first session with every client is an intake assessment and we will discuss your options for moving forward. You also have the option for a free discovery call before you book anything.
My counsellor training began in the person-centred approach covering also an introduction/taster to a range of other modalities (Gestalt, CBT, Jungian,..). II then specialised early, training with Relate over 3 years mainly based on two approaches - systemic/relationship and psychodynamic (click on each of these to find out more). As well as exploring a wealth of relational topics, I also learnt the important art of neutrality when working with couples or groups of people - supporting all parties equally. Since qualifying, I continue to explore others theories in CPD such as emotionally focused therapy, neuroscience & trauma-informed counselling, as well as covering life issues/challenges, safeguarding and equality/inclusion topics. I have studied with the Foundation for Infant Loss as pregnancy & infant loss, rainbow baby & infertility practitioner, and trained with Spurgeons charity to deliver the Cafcass SPIPS programme for separating parents. Over the last decade I have worked for Relate Mid & East Surrey, later Surrey Counselling & Mediation charity, and have been offering sessions privately since May. Prior to counselling I have worked in education, both in supporting SEN and in pastoral care (bereavement & young carers) and have worked within the emergency services. I undertook a range of training including working with complicated grief, alternative provisions and neurodiversity, and qualified in supporting speech and language difficulties. Training & my own life experiences give me a range of ideas to draw on but the therapeutic relationship remains the most important factor in a positive outcome and so the priority is always the individual and tailoring my approach to their needs and way of working.
Not everyone needs/wants a long piece of work so I am happy to provide one-off sessions or sessions that can be booked as required. One-off sessions can be useful for a short discussion on a topic or for a pre-commitment session. I offer 1hr or an extended 1hr 30 timeslot. Ad-hoc sessions are one-off sessions that can be booked when needed.
